For Common Core math, you can help your first grade students by reinforcing them to "count on". "Counting on" is a strategy for addition. So, if your child has 5 marbles and is given 4 more, encourage your child to start with the number 5 and count 6, 7, 8, 9 to find the total of 9. This would be related to Standard 1.OA.C.6, add and subtract within 20.
These tips will also be available to view at any time if you look to the top right corner of the page. There is a button that says Common Core Tips. From now on, feel free to click that and see those tips. I will be adding more tips in the future for ELA and Math for all grade levels (K-5).
Report cards will be coming home with your children today. Please make sure you remember to bring your copy to conferences next week so you can discuss with the teachers. Remember, Parent-Teacher Conferences are November 24 & 25. Conference hours on Nov. 24 are from 2:00 - 8:00, and on Nov. 25 they are from 8:00 - 2:00.
